Picture this: It’s the last week of August.

Payday came and went. After rent, groceries, and bills, you have forty dollars left until the next cheque.

And your child needs indoor shoes. And outdoor shoes. And a lunch bag. And a backpack, because last year’s has a broken zipper and doesn’t quite fit anymore.

Forty dollars.

That’s the reality many families in Clarington East are facing right now, and it’s exactly why our Back to School program exists.

More Than Supplies — A Fresh Start

We believe education is one of the most powerful things we can give a child. But before a child can focus on learning, they need to walk into their classroom on the first day feeling like they belong, in shoes that fit, with a backpack they’re proud of, and ready to focus on friends, new experiences, and the excitement of a new school year.

That’s the part that can be easy to overlook.

Back-to-school isn’t just a financial expense. It can also be an emotional one for parents and children alike. When a family is stretched thin, the excitement of a new school year can be buried beneath financial stress.

Our goal is simple: take some of that stress off a parent’s shoulders so the excitement can come back to the surface.

Why Gift Cards Instead of Pre-Packed Backpacks?

This is a question we hear, and it’s a fair one. Wouldn’t it be easier to fill backpacks with supplies and hand them out?

Here’s why we don’t do it that way.

At Clarington East Food Bank, we believe in a hand up, not a handout and a gift card puts that belief into practice. It gives parents and children the freedom to choose what they actually need.

Think about what it means for a child to walk into Walmart with their parent and pick out their own backpack. They get to choose the colour, the style and the things that make it feel like theirs.

That may seem like a small thing to an adult.

To a child, it can mean everything.

It’s dignity. It’s choice. It’s a moment of feeling normal, feeling included and feeling excited about the year ahead.

And that excitement can carry them right into the new school year.

The Numbers Behind the Program

This year, Clarington East Food Bank distributed over $13,000 in Walmart gift cards to 62 families, supporting over a 156 students across our community.

Gift card values are scaled according to the student’s grade, starting at $50, because we know a kindergartener’s needs can look very different from those of a graduating high school student.

Our hope is that this support gives families a real head start on the essentials — a backpack, shoes, lunch supplies and school necessities that add up quickly, particularly when a household has several children preparing for September.

In Their Own Words

We asked families what back-to-school looks like for them. One neighbour shared:

“These times are a greater hardship for us as back to school is a much higher expense than typical weekly expenses. We are living paycheque to paycheque and there isn’t anything extra for back to school. Each of my children require at least three pairs of shoes come September, along with backpacks, lunch bags, and water bottles. Any support is greatly appreciated.”

After receiving their gift card, another parent wrote:

“Thank you so much for this wonderful support! We’re happy to share this picture with you. The gift card helped us bring home some of the things that will make the new school year great for our son. We truly appreciate the generosity and kindness of everyone who made this possible.”

Even the kids took the time to say thank you, and their notes may say more about this program than we ever could.

• Child A shared that he was grateful for the money, was able to get many of his school supplies and planned to share with his classmates.
• Child B told us that the support helped him buy new shoes and school supplies.
• Child C thanked “the Clarington Team” for the gift card and said she was thankful for her school supplies, ending with a wish that we have a good day.
• Child D wrote to thank us for the gift card, which helped him buy crayons and markers to share with his friends.

A Moment We Won’t Forget

Not long ago, one of our team members was doing her own shopping at Walmart when she ran into a neighbour who had received a Back to School gift card.

Her child was practically bouncing with excitement, eager to show off the outfit they had picked out together for the first day of school.

That’s the whole program, right there.

A parent and child shopping together. A child excited about what they chose. A family able to focus on the new school year instead of worrying about how they were going to afford it.

One small moment in a store aisle, but a meaningful one.

A family we were able to support this Back to School season.

 

This Program Doesn’t Happen Without Our Community

None of this is possible without the people and organizations who continue to invest in local families.

A huge thank you to Bloomfield Gardens for their garden and tea party fundraiser, Rona for their T-shirt sale, and the Wilmot Creek Auxiliary and Wilmot Creek Dart Club.

Your support became something very tangible: new backpacks, new shoes, school supplies and over 156 children heading into the school year with a little less worry and a lot more excitement.

And that is what community looks like.
